Do you think you’re OVER Paying Your Vehicle Mechanic?

Readers Question: I am on a strong budget, should I tell my mechanic how much I can afford to spend?

Do you like to consider your car in regarding repairs? Do you ever think that you were cheated or cheated by the shop or maybe their mechanics? Do you know it could be what you are saying towards the repair shop that could be costing you more? Most auto repair outlets are run by honest hard-working people playing with some circumstances you may bring out the dark side in some shops.

For instance, never tell the look how much you are willing to spend without first getting evidence of what you will definitely have done. When you give this shop a “spending limit” they may tend to do as little as you possibly can but will manage to waste up to your limit. For example, a woman came in to my shop and laughed and said she had $500 to invest. She did not get started with her conversation with “hello”, or “can you repair my car”, all she said was what kind of money she wanted to give me.

Now granted, it is nice to get people come into the shop as well as like to pay his or her bills, but this lady gave me a spending limit before she informed me what she wanted to possess fixed. She thought she received transmission trouble and assumed that it would cost her a lot of money to repair. While on a test drive with her I concluded that the problem was certainly not transmission-related, but that the car or truck probably needed a tune up or something along those lines.

But wait, this person wanted to provide me $500! If I was no honest shop owner, I would have remained quiet for the test drive and taken the cash that she was prepared to pay. Let’s say that When i told this customer that i could fix her car because I will be a nice guy and also since she only had $500 to invest I would try that can help her out approximately I could. In reality, the actual repairs needed can have only cost $200.

Because this customer idea she had expensive sign trouble, she would probably pleased a bill for $350 and she is going to also think the retail outlet did her a favor. Her first mistake was to diagnose the challenge herself. I wonder if she travels to her dentist and conveys to her which tooth for you to pull or if she thinks it can be time for another actual canal? You take your car to the repair shop to have another individual diagnose and repair your vehicle; so let them perform their job. Her second mistake was to express to the shop how much she was happy to spend.

Most of the mechanics and service writers i always know of work in commission, and in the case above, an additional $150 would sure be a nice tip. I see this happen at all times and it is so simple to prevent. Sometimes it is safer to simply describe the symptoms for the service writer, remain quiet about your budget dollars and let the shop diagnose the issue with your car and how much it’ll cost you to repair.

If the problem you are having with your car will demand a test drive for the mechanic or service writer to hear ensure you ride in the car with them right at that moment you drop off your car for repairs. If they can’t find out it or feel it they are unable to fix it, and you will almost certainly just get frustrated and discouraged by them not the ability to repair the problem you would like them to fix.
